Some kids came to the garden unable to name anything they felt. They said βIβm fineβ while shaking. They punched walls instead of crying. They didnβt melt down - they imploded.
Patch assigned them a teacher: worms.
βWorms eat rot. Thatβs their job,β Patch explained. βThey donβt judge what it used to be. Banana peel or breakup letter. They chew. They change it. They let it go.β
The kids made a worm bin. Wrote on the side in marker:
βFEELINGS GO HERE.β
Anger went in first - ripped notebook pages, crumpled drawings, clay smashed into pieces.
Then shame - old report cards, torn bits of βsorryβ scribbled and unsaid.
Sadness came last, slow and soggy.
The worms never said βcalm down.β They just kept chewing.
One day, a kid named Mia leaned into the bin and whispered:
βDo you think Iβm disgusting?β
A worm poked its head out of a pear stem and wiggled. Mia laughed until she cried.
Patch handed her a trowel.
βTime to harvest,β they said.
What came out wasnβt trash anymore. It was soil - black, rich, honest.
βEverything you feel can feed something else,β said Patch. βEven if no one taught you how.β
Mia took a handful. Planted basil. Named it Hope.
She added a new label to the bin:
#ResistanceIsFertile.
